‘DDLJ is timeless!’ On 25th anniversary of the all-time blockbuster, Kajol opens up on what makes Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge the most loved romantic film in the history of Indian cinema.

By Priyanka Raina

Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol starrer Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (lovingly also called DDLJ), directed by Aditya Chopra, completes 25 years today and the film’s leading lady opens up about why the film is hailed as the most loved romantic film in the history of Indian cinema. DDLJ shattered all box office records and is one of the biggest all-time blockbusters in the history of Hindi cinema. It also went on to become the longest-running Hindi film of all time as it has played in theatres for 25 long years!

Kajol says, “I think DDLJ is timeless because everybody identifies somewhere down the line with Simran and with Raj. I think they just like these characters a lot! They have liked them for years and years now and it’s one of those things that you always like and probably will always like.”

Kajol’s character Simran, redefined portrayal of women on screen. Simran was traditional yet modern in her outlook and was hugely relatable to people. Kajol says, “I thought Simran was a little boring to be honest, but I recognized her. I realized there is a lot of Simran in almost everybody we know, there is always that wanting to do the right thing in someone. Lot of people don’t do the right thing but we always want to do that. You want to get that approval, you want to get that feeling of you are approved of and that you are doing something right in the world. So, yes Simran was like that. I thought she was just cool, a little old-fashioned but cool.”

Talking about her director, Aditya Chopra, whose debut directorial DDLJ became a trailblazing film in Indian pop culture history, Kajol says, “I think what sets Adi apart is probably his conviction. He is very, very convinced of what he is making and doesn’t take on a project if he isn’t absolutely convinced about it. That really is what sets him apart. He is not willing to let go off that basic core conviction that he has in his characters and he knows them best.”

Kajol and SRK are an eternal on-screen romantic jodi who have made generations of Indians fall in love with the idea of romance and it started with DDLJ. Kajol tells us about what she loved about Simran and Raj. The acclaimed actress says, “We were shooting for DDLJ and we never thought that we were making this! We just thought we were going to make a really cool film together and hopefully, it will be a hit film and we were all crossing our fingers that the music will do well etc but I don’t think anyone of us ever realized the kind of impact DDLJ would have on people when they saw it!”

DDLJ is also the winner of a record-breaking (at the time) 10 Filmfare Awards and the film literally changed the face of Bollywood globally. The film was made at a budget of 4 crore and the blockbuster, in 1995, collected 89 crore in India, 13.50 crore in overseas markets. Thus, total collections stood at 102.50 crore worldwide in 1995! In today’s inflation adjusted value, DDLJ’s collection stands at a staggering 455 crore in India and 69 crore in overseas territories, taking the total worldwide collections to a phenomenal 524 crore!

DDLJ was the first film, In India, to use behind the scenes – UDAY CHOPRA

DDLJ was the first film, In India, to use behind the scenes as a means of promoting the movie’ : says Uday Chopra, who directed this piece and earned rave reviews from industry and audience .

By Priyanka Raina

Written and directed by debutant Aditya Chopra, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (lovingly also called DDLJ), shattered all box office records and is one of the biggest all-time blockbusters in the history of Hindi cinema. The film starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol gave India a new on-screen pair to fall in love with for generations to come. It also went on to become the longest-running Hindi film of all time! Little do people know that DDLJ, which completes 25 years on October 20th, was also the first film in the history of Indian cinema to produce a making of a film, popularly called Behind The Scenes (BTS) today!

Uday Chopra

Uday Chopra reveals, “Adi wanted to do something that no one had ever done before in India with DDLJ. He asked me to be in-charge of directing the ‘making’ and since this had not been done before, I had to pretty much invent how to go about it. Having just returned from film school in California, I decided this would be a great opportunity to try my hand at another aspect of film-making.

The first thing we needed was lots of footage on set and back then S-VHS was kind of the only viable option to do it. So apart from being an assistant on the set I also became the videographer for the BTS footage!” He adds, “I remember I would literally have a camera in one hand and the clap in the other, with a utility belt to keep all the batteries, charging cables and spare parts; I was quite a sight on set!

The advantage, which I later discovered was that all the artists were very comfortable with me being right in their faces and this made for some really interesting and intimate shots, which helped the BTS footage tremendously. DDLJ was the first film that started a trend which is now popularly called BTS! Behind The Scenes (BTS), though back then we just called it ’The Making’.”

Uday says, “We were the first film whose behind the scenes footage was telecast on Doordarshan.

The channel made a special show out of the exclusive content that was shared to them. When the making aired, we got tons of wishes and it was a huge validation for trying to do something new for audiences. DDLJ’s BTS was an eye opener for the industry to do the same going forward and we are proud that our film contributed in setting a new benchmark in India when it comes to marketing a film.”

YRF celebrates 1 year of WAR between Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff | Note from Siddarth Anand

We had two action superstars, we had to set a benchmark!’ : says Sid Anand on WAR’s first anniversary, a film that set all-time box office records and was the highest grossing movie of 2019

WAR is an all-time historic blockbuster that set the box office on fire in 2019 and became the highest grossing film of the year. Directed by Siddharth Anand, the film starred two of the biggest action superstars of the country Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff in an adrenaline pumping face off. On the 1st anniversary of the film that grossed close to 320 crore nett in India, Sid Anand reveals that Aditya Chopra and he had set out to achieve a new benchmark for action spectacles in India with WAR.

Siddharth Anand

Siddharth Anand says, “When we started out, the script of WAR was being written, I was writing it like an English film. It didn’t have songs, its language was very new. When I say language, I don’t mean spoken language, it is the language of the film, the way scenes unfold. The content of each scene, the way the screenplay unfolds, it was a little complex in terms of the timeline and the way things were moving, it was like a relentless thriller. I didn’t know what the palette of the audience would be in 2 years to the time the film releases, to keep up with the current trends, the evolving taste of the audience.”

He adds, “When the film came out, it was extremely relevant and contemporary thankfully, that was the endeavor. When the film was cast, it had Hrithik and Tiger – the casting was just through the roof! It was a dream cast and we weren’t expecting two superstars coming together! Now-a-days to get one actor on a film is so tough, and to get two superstars was like a dream. So, naturally the expectations of the film went high.”

Siddharth has always given something new to audiences through his cinema. From Salaam Namaste, Ta Ra Rum Pum, Bang Bang! and now WAR, the director has shown that he is an extremely ambitious film-maker who wants to bring forth newness on screen.

He says, “The fact that we got two action superstars, we had to set a benchmark. When I started making action films, I started in 2012, I just knew that there is no benchmark or template for me in India. Because I don’t think we make many action films or good action films in India. I wanted to beat my own expectations of what I’ve achieved in the previous action films. My competition was the action in Bang Bang! There was very new, very radical stuff that we did in Bang Bang! and I was competing with that and wanted to give audiences a little more than that and I ended up giving them a whole lot more with WAR.”

Talking about his creative discussions that he had with YRF head honcho Aditya Chopra while setting out to make WAR, Siddharth reveals, “The most important factor in making a big action spectacle film is the producer. And we had someone like Adi, who is a no holds barred producer. He doesn’t spare any expenses but of course he makes sure that the money is well spent and correctly spent. And whatever you spend it shows on screen. I had someone who doesn’t flinch in giving the audience a spectacle that they have not seen and rise beyond the expectations!”

WAR

He adds, “I mean he is the kind of a producer who I could give mad suggestion like – lets go shoot a car chase sequence in the arctic. I mean any other producer at that point in time would’ve said you have Hrithik and Tiger, just do the action sequence on a set and do some mind-blowing action within that set, blow up the set if you want. I did that also and I did the arctic car chase, so the fact that I can even suggest these things because I know that there is an equally mad producer in Adi, who just lives and breathes films and cinema; and is there only to better it.”

“Yash ji would consider everyone equal!”, says Mahen Vakil- EP of the iconic film-maker Yash Chopra, who also happens to be the first employee of YRF!

 By :  Priyanka Raina

Yash ji would consider everyone equal!’ : says Mahen Vakil, the executive producer of the iconic film-maker Yash Chopra, who also happens to be the first employee of Yash Raj Films

Mahen Vakil – First emplyee of YRF and Executive Producer to Iconic Yash Chopra

Yash Chopra is an enigma, an icon in the Indian film industry. The hailed film-maker has given audiences blockbuster films and was hugely lauded for his progressive style of cinema. His body of work includes cult classics like Daag, Deewar, Lamhe, Silsila, Chandni, Darr, Dil To Pagal Hai, Veer-Zaara, Jab Tak Hai Jaan, to name a few. For those who knew and worked with Yash Chopra, the man behind the legend was equally fascinating.

Yash Chopra

Mahen Vakil became the first employee of Yash Raj Films when the iconic film-maker started his production house, 50 years back. Mahen’s journey with YRF and Yash ji saw him being promoted to become the Executive Producer of YRF. He unravels the icon, who he says promoted an atmosphere of equality at YRF and on the film sets, a culture that YRF firmly stands by even today under the leadership of Yash ji’s son Aditya Chopra.

Mahen says, “He never compromised on his work! When he would explain any scene to the artist, he would get so involved that you would wish Yash ji would rather perform it himself. His briefing to the actors was so clear and in such great detail that you would get the best performance out from them. Love stories these days are far different than what Yash Chopra used to make. His love stories are simply unparalleled.”

Mahen adds, “His films used to be very expensive because he believed in high technology and did not believe in compromising. What was made in 1965, even today if you look back, his set designs, costumes, etc are unmatchable. For him, the process to making a film was extremely pure. As employees, we were empowered to do what we want to because he trusted us to deliver for him. He left no stone unturned to achieve the scale, to make the film he wanted to make.”

Lamhe

Talking about how Yash Chopra was on the sets, Mahen reveals, “Yashji was full of life! He would consider everyone equal! He used to be there on set 1.5 hours prior to the shift time and would stand with folded hands near the gate and notice what time everyone was entering! It didn’t look nice to enter after the boss has entered, so we would all make it a point to reach earlier. Would you ever see such an atmosphere on today’s set?”

For Mahen, his most favorite Yash Chopra movie is Lamhe, which released in 1991. The incredible film starred Anil Kapoor and Sridevi in lead roles and was about the power of life-changing love. “My personal favourite, any day, is Lamhe! It didn’t work as much because it was ahead of its time and it was not so easily acceptable then but it is a cult film now! Yashji made the movie so wonderfully. He made it with all his heart!” he says.

For someone, who touched the dizzying heights of success, Yash ji was an extremely people’s person. He says, “He was a man with a kind heart! One could hurt him very easily and he was very close to his staff and that created a healthy environment. That’s the reason his staff worked for him for several years.”

ADDITIONAL QUOTES: About his love for food: “Each time the shoot was extended beyond the work hours, food was organized for everyone. Yashji was a big time foodie.

One time I told him about a parathawala in Chembur who made amazing parathas. He was called on the set along with his tandoor and other equipment and was asked to make parathas for all, which everyone enjoyed. Yashji got tremendous joy from feeding others. Every time there was an outdoor shoot, the entire unit (including spotboy to the actors) would stay in the same hotel, which would be a premium 5 star hotel. Would any director do that in this generation?

Morning breakfast was like a 5 star buffet with lots of variety. On outdoors, 3 cooks would travel from Mumbai, including one assistant.”

Brotherly Bond with iconic poet Sahir Ludhianvi: “Sahir Ludhianvi was a big writer back then and no one had the courage to correct him or ask him to change his writing. But somehow Yashji’s knowledge on poetry was so good that he was the only one who could convince him to change few lines. They would call each other brothers. It was quite surprising to make such a big poet change his writing.”
